The word Sherpa is not a title and does not mean mountaineer, guide or porter. Sherpa is the name of the ethnic group who inhabit the southern flanks of the Himalayan range in north-east Nepal. Sherpas are of Tibetan origin who migrated from the Kham province in Tibet about 200 years ago. The Sherpa language is a dialect of Tibetan; and their religion is Buddhism. Due to their natural acclimatization to high altitude, they are amongst the best trekkers and mountaineers in Nepal
